The bioflavonoids in grapeseed extract and ginkgo biloba help strengthen blood vessels and improve blood flow to the extremities. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are especially essential for people with unstable blood sugar, making it very important to cut out the EFAblocking hydrogenated oils found in chips, baked goods and nearly all processed foods. Research has shown that diabetics given evening primrose oil for a year had improved nerve function, while those on a placebo got worse.
The herb ginkgo biloba isn't just great for improving blood flow to the brain and improving memory, it improves blood flow everywhere! Let's find out more about natural remedies for impotence. Natural Remedies for Impotence Even if you haven't been diagnosed with atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), impotence is nearly always a sign that circulation in the penis isn't as good as it could be. See Chapter 9 on drugs for heart disease for natural remedies for better circulation.

Instead of recommending Viagra6 to patients with impotence problems, I usually start with a prescription of ginkgo biloba (and sometimes some ginseng as well). Ginkgo works very well, is much less expensive, and doesn't have any side effects—unlike Viagra8. Because ginkgo improves penile blood flow, it provides the physiological basis for an erection. In one study, 50 percent of patients treated for impotence using 60 milligrams of ginkgo per day regained potency. I generally recommend 180 to 240 milligrams of ginkgo in the treatment of impotence.

Oken et al., 1998). Among the most encouraging studies are those that show improvements in depression with the elderly. Clinically depressed patients taking standard medications improved significantly with the addition of ginkgo (Schubert and Halama, 1993). Equally encouraging was an open trial showing that treatment with ginkgo was 84% effective in neutralizing sexual dysfunction caused by antidepressant medicines, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) (Cohen and Bartlik, 1998).

I guess it's better than the ignorance of years ago, but it's still troublesome for the woman who's trying to make sense of what this inevitable marker in her life will mean. Menopause used to be a virtual mystery; before the 1900s most women died around the age of fifty, a few years before the average onset of menopause. As women lived longer, there were doctors who denied that menopause was anything but a psychological problem. Tranquilizers were thought to be the solution.

Nature's Anti-Inflammatory Agent The Hot 100 includes a derivative of licorice called IXil., which is excellent for gastrointestinal disorders such as chronic indigcs tion and stomach ulcers (see page 42). DGL is a form of licorice that is stripped of glycyrrhetinic acid, a natural anti-inflammatory compound that under certain conditions can raise blood pressure. Therefore, if you have high blood pressure, I recommend that you do not use real licorice products but stick to DGL. But if blood pressure isn't a problem, licorice products may be beneficial.

The volunteers experienced improved concentration, better memory, and less absentmindedness and confusion. Researchers believe that the herb may work by preventing damage from free radicals. Gotu kola—This herb has been used in India and China for hundreds of years, where it is part of traditional herbal medicine. Recent studies show that gotu kola has a positive effect on the circulatory system by strengthening the veins and capillaries, thereby improving the flow of blood throughout the body, including to the brain.
