Native Americans introduced several important phytomedicines to Western medicine, including cinchona, sarsaparilla, coca, black cohosh, sassafras, witch hazel, capsicum, goldenseal, and echinacea.
When Europeans first encountered the healing traditions of Native Americans, their perception was shaped by an entrenched attitude toward healing medicines. To the Europeans, herbs were medicines that you took when you were sickand that was all. | Kathi Keville See book keywords and concepts | Many midwives and herbalists suggest taking very small amounts of black cohosh and blue cohosh during the last two weeks of pregnancy, because they believe that these herbs prepare the uterus for the final run by encouraging the light, early contractions women begin to feel weeks before labor begins. The two types of cohosh are also used to encourage a slow labor once serious contractions begin. Although it is suggested in some herb books that these herbs should be taken throughout pregnancy, this is definitely not a good idea. | | This means that a few herbs, such as goldenseal and black cohosh, and gums such as myrrh, are stronger when made into a tincture.
Making a tincture requires no heat, so essential oils are retained.
One ounce of tincture contains about 600 drops or six teaspoons, which equals about 20 doses per bottle. Price-wise, that's about 35 to 40 cents a dose. This means that tinctures are more costly than tea, but most people don't mind paying for the convenience. When using the herbs suggested in this book, it is not necessary to use the exact number of drops; estimating is fine. | Gale Maleskey See book keywords and concepts | As a single supplement, black cohosh is available in tablets, capsules, and tincture.
Wouldn't it be wonderful news for beer-lovin' adults if a nice cold brew turned out to be the answer to all of their health problems? We can just hear the doctor now: "Got a cold? Ha\e a Bud," or "Allergies acting up? Try a Heineken."
A beer drinker's dreambut not true of the brew. There's no beer that will fulfill our nutritional needs. Ephedra and the caffeine-rich plants coffee, guarana, mate and kola nut stimulate the adrenal glands and can make you nervous, cause your heart to race and make it hard for you to sleep. Chances are that if caffeine were a new drug today, the FDA would approve it for prescription use only. | | Chances are that this is not true of aspirin-like herbs, but you might as well play it safe. black cohosh and blue cohosh are sometimes used during the last few weeks of pregnancy to prepare the uterus for childbirth, but if you are interested in using these herbs, I recommend that you find someone who is experienced in herbs to work with you.

Cimicifuga racemosa (family: Ranunculaceae)
Common names: black cohosh, macrotys, rattleweed, black snake root
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Cimicifuga racemosa is a perennial herb native to North America that grows on hillsides and in woods at higher elevations from Maine and Ontario to Wisconsin, Georgia, and Missouri. The large, creeping rhizome produces stems up to 9 feet high. The ovate or oblong leaflets are 1-6 inches long and 4 inches wide, while the smaller leaflets are ternate, then pinnate, and sometimes even further divided. | | This is in contrast to other phytomedicines, like black cohosh, frequently used in gynecology, which directly bind to estrogen receptors through their content of phytoestrogens.8
Vitex also modulates the secretion of prolactin from the pituitary gland. Early animal studies indicated an increase in lactation and enlargement of the mammary gland following administration of Vitex.7
Current research with Vitex indicates usefulness in hyperprolactinemia. In studies with rats, Vitex was shown to inhibit prolactin release by the pituitary gland - particularly under stress. |
