His herbal burn remedy from Germany, for example, is a mixture of wheat germ oil, honey and comfrey leaves. If this doesn't work, I doubt that anything else will. His Icelandic remedy for breaking up a cold consists of chopped onions, barley water and some cod-liver oil. I can't even imagine what this would taste like, but my guess is that your cold wouldn't like it. |

To be perfectly safe, internal use of comfrey should be avoided. The same goes for coltsfoot.
Some herbs may be used with safety in small amounts, but one should be very cautious with them. These include tansy, rue, valerian, lobelia, goldenseal and bloodroot. Tansy is narcotic and may cause abortion. Valerian in excessive doses may cause headaches and even delusions (never boil valerian). Goldenseal should present no problems if taken in weak doses, something on the order of one-quarter teaspoon in a cup of hot water. Pennyroyal should not be taken in large doses or in oil form. |

Mucilages are thick, viscid, adhesive liquids that are produced by dissolving gum in water, or by extracting by cold infusion the mucilaginous principles of Slippery Elm, Marshmallow, or comfrey.
When making the lozenge-mass, using a (moist) mucilage is a preferred technique to mixing the dry gum powder with the other dry ingredients and then adding the water. In this method it is often chfEcult to avoid an excess of moisture.
Preparing a Mucilage
Using mucilaginous herb:
1. Macerate overnight 6 parts (6 Gm) dried herb in 100 parts (100 ml) of water.

| Avoid comfrey, coltsfoot, and false morels. Cut out and throw away green or damaged spots on potatoes. And don't eat noncommercially harvested shellfish. Although ciguatoxin, scombrotoxin, or paralytic shellfish toxin can't be detected by smell or taste or destroyed by cooking, the risks are mainly associated with certain regions of the country or certain types of seafood, so avoiding them is relatively easy. | Just make sure the teas don't contain coltsfoot, sassafras, or comfrey, which are suspected carcinogens. Sassafras was banned from food in 1960 because of cancer concerns.
If you drink lots of regular, nonherbal tea, one concern besides caffeine is tannin, a naturally occurring mixture of chemicals that may be cancer-causing. Your best bet is to drink your tea the British way—with milk, which binds the tannin and makes it insoluble.
But if you drink a lot of coffee or tea and add whole milk or cream to it, you could also be adding plenty of calories and saturated fat to your diet. |
| Some products to avoid include "health" bars loaded with fat; raw-sugar products, such as Sucanat, which is advertised as being loaded with vitamins and minerals but is little better than table sugar or brown sugar; raw milk and raw cheese, which can cause food poisoning; and comfrey and coltsfoot teas that might promote cancer.

Constipation
Constipation results when food moves too slowly through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. No exact frequency of bowel movements or amount of symptoms associated with constipation (such as hard stools and excessive straining) precisely defines constipation. The most common cause is probably dietary (discussed below). However, constipation can be a component of irritable bowel syndrome (p. |

V Cumin (Cuminum cyminum). Cumin is used liberally in Mexican foods. My former U.S. Department of Agriculture colleague, molecular biologist Stephen Beckstrom-Stemberg, Ph.D., and I once studied the properties of this spice and discovered three pain-relieving compounds, seven that are anti-inflammatory and four that combat swelling. If I had CTS, I'd use lots of cumin on food and add it to my curried rice.
