| Herbs That May Be Helpful
Ephedrine, an alkaloid extracted from ephedra (p. 420), is an approved over-the-counter treatment for bronchial tightness associated with asthma.33 Over-the-counter drugs containing ephedrine can be safely used by adults in the amount of 12.5-25 mg every 4 hours. Adults should take a total dose of no more than 150 mg every 24 hours. They should refer to labels for children's dosages. Ephedrine has largely been replaced by other bronchodilating drugs, such as alupent and albuterol. |

Extremely high doses of ephedra, a stimulant herb, have caused deaths. Some essential oils are very dangerous when taken internally, even in small amounts. That's why their labels will warn you not to ingest them. Some herbs have interactions with drugs or other herbs that can range from uncomfortable to life-threatening. Some even interact with food substances as common as caffeine.
As with any product, the most important thing to do before using an herb is to read the label carefully and completely. |

Whether Andean Indians chewing coca leaves, Chinese herbalists prescribing ephedra, or North American Indians ceremonially smoking peyote, these low-potency, naturally occurring agents have always been used in the context of complex rituals and close cultural ties. Today, we use much more dangerous, potent, synthetic drugs to treat individuals who very often are isolated, making the setting all the more important for safety.

_I ial sites in Iraq indicate that Neanderthal tribes used such herbs as yarrow, thistle, and ephedra over 60,000. Healing plants mentioned in the Bible include garlic, onions, mandrake, hyssop, aloes, mint, nettles, coriander, cassia, frankincense, and myrrh. The ancient Egyptians used licorice, fennel, juniper berries, thyme, and senna for medicinal purposes. Pieces of licorice were even found in King Tut's tomb.

| The Chinese used ma huang, ephedra sinica, as an herbal stimulant to improve circulation and open up bronchial passages. It wasn't until the late nineteenth century that scientists isolated the alkaloid ephedrine from this plant. This drug is commonly used today for hay fever, asthma, and the common cold.
Ginger is the most popular Chinese herb used in cooking. It stimulates the circulatory system and aids digestion. Chinese herbal medicine relies on complex herbal formulas that are designed to balance the body's energy flow. |

They include the herb-derived combination of caffeine (from coffee) and ephedrine (from Chinese ephedra, or ma huang) that's used in some physician-supervised weight-loss programs for dangerously obese people. Personally, if I experienced appetite loss, I'd cut back or even eliminate my coffee consumption to see if it helped.
Depressants also contribute to appetite loss. It's a common side effect of prescription narcotic pain relievers. But by far the chief culprit is alcohol. While one or two drinks may make you hungry, more than that can have the opposite effect. |

Ephedrine has largely been replaced by other bronchodilating drugs, such as alupent and albuterol. ephedra sinica, also known as ma huang, continues to be a component of traditional herbal preparations for asthma, often in amounts of 1-2 grams of the herb per day.
Traditionally, herbs that have a soothing action on bronchioles are also used for asthma. These would include marshmallow (p. 444), mullein (p. 446), and licorice (p. 440).
Ginkgo (p. 427) extracts have been considered a potential therapy for asthma for some time. |
| The early nineteenth-century Eclectic physicians in the United States (who used herbs as their main medicine) not only employed eucalyptus (p. 421) oil to sterilize instruments and wounds but recommended a steam inhalation of the vapor of the oil to help treat asthma (p. 15), bronchitis, whooping cough, and emphysema.7
Thyme (p. 464) has a long history of use in Europe for the treatment of dry, spasmodic coughs as well as bronchitis.8 Its antispasmodic actions have made it a common traditional recommendation for whooping cough. |
