Hoodia gordonii update: Honest sellers, safety information and weight loss realities

Mike Adams, the Health Ranger
See article keywords and concepts
Hoodia is likely to suffer the same fate as ephedra. Sooner or later, somebody is going to keel over from popping a whole bottle of counterfeit hoodia pills that don't even contain real hoodia. The FDA will issue a misinformed warning statement and the press will go ape nuts crazy over it. Television shows will find "experts" who will testify that hoodia is dangerous. Hoodia will get banned, and that just might be the end of the hoodia industry. So if you want genuine hoodia gordonii, you may want to order it now.

Natural Cures They Don't Want You to Know About

Remember those deaths were linked to ephedra, not proven to be caused by ephedra. But the FDA still said they believed it showed that the herb was too dangerous and must be banned. However, Vioxx is now known to have killed over a 100,000 people. Yet the FDA still has not taken any action and banned it from the market place. In the last few weeks there have been organizations now that have shown and proven that drug advertising has been false and misleading. Where is the Federal Trade Commission???

John: Yes, and the court just quite recently made a ruling that all ephedra is banned. Well, the outrageous thing about this is that they are not doing a damn thing about the far more dangerous pseudoephedrine found in over-the-counter cold preparations, which any 6-year-old tall enough to reach the checkout counter in a supermarket can purchase with no questions asked. Mike: It is that interesting double standard -- when a chemical compound is synthesized by nature in a plant they say it is deadly, but when it is synthesized in a laboratory under a patent, they say it is perfectly safe.
John: There is hard evidence that pseudoephedrine is far more dangerous than the herb ephedra comes from, called Ma Huang. We are seeing a slippery slope into the abyss here unless the consuming public can somehow be rallied fast enough to see the big picture. We need people to pull their heads out of the sand and recognize that we are seeing an effort made to destroy America.

It's also interesting that the FDA should describe ephedra as being "unsafe at any dose" when many other toxic chemicals added to foods, drugs, and cosmetics are universally declared to be "safe at low doses" even when such chemicals are known carcinogens. Processed meat producers, for example, are allowed to add cancer-causing sodium nitrite to bacon, sausage, pepperoni, ham, and other meat products.

Bottom Line's Prescription Alternatives

The FDA has been investigating ephedra's potential dangers over the past few years, and they haven't come up with good enough evidence of its harmfulness to ban it, but it is a potent substance and should be used with care. (Again, let's remember that dozens of over-the-counter and prescription drugs contain synthetic versions of ephedra [e.g. pseudofed] and related substances, and the FDA hasn't created nearly as much flap about those!) If you've tried everything and your allergy symptoms are still affecting the quality of your life, look into desensitization (allergy shots).

People with insomnia are typically advised to avoid stimulants such as caffeine (found in coffee, tea, and soda), diet pills containing ephedra, and over the counter cold and allergy products containing pseudoephedrine. Dietary changes that may be helpful Caffeine is a stimulant.1 The effects of caffeine can last up to 20 hours,2 so some people will have disturbed sleep patterns even when their last cup of coffee was in the morning. Besides regular coffee, black tea, green tea (page 686), cocoa, chocolate, some soft drinks, and many over-the-counter pharmaceuticals also contain caffeine.

Today ephedra, available at health food stores and herb shops and through mail-order herb catalogs, is still widely used to treat the chest congestion of colds, flu and allergies. In fact, millions of people who have no idea they're taking a medicinal herb regularly use a chemical modeled after a constituent of ephedra. "One chemical in Chinese ephedra is the decongestant pseu-doephedrine," explains Varro Tyler, Ph.D., professor of pharmacognosy at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and author of The New Honest Herbal.

In herbal medicine ephedra is valued highly as a reliable treatment for asthma and allergic conditions of all types. Being both bron-chodilatory and nasal decongestant (due to constriction of blood vessels), ephedra is useful also in bronchitis, emphysema, rhinitis, as well as common colds and influenza. It is contra-indicated for hypertension, angina pectoris, hyperthyroidism, during pregnancy and where monoamine oxidase inhibitors are being used. Other alkaloidal amines include: • Colchicine—from Colchicum autumnale (Liliaceae), the autumn crocus.

The optimum dosage of ephedra depends on the alkaloid content in the form used. The ephedra dose should have an ephedrine content of 12.5-25.0 mg and be taken two to three times daily. For the crude herb, this dosage would most likely be 500-1,000 mg three times/day. Standardized preparations are often preferred as they have more dependable therapeutic activity. ephedra can be combined with herbal expectorants as described above. Glycyrrhiza glabra • Powdered root: 1-2 g • Fluid extract (1:1): 2-4 ml • Solid (dry powdered) extract (4:1): 250-500 mg. Camellia sinensis.

A good herbal allergy formula consists of ephedra, echinacea, wild cherry bark, white willow bark, mullein leaves, cayenne pepper, and garlic. ephedra (ma huang) and echinacea are often used together. ephedra causes vasoconstriction, echinacea improves the white blood cell response, and both have been shown to lower IgE levels. Wild cherry bark, coltsfoot leaf, and mullein leaves are lung-strengthening herbs; white willow bark is an anti-inflammatory; cayenne supports circulation; and garlic assists in detoxification.

With the approval of orlistat (available by prescription as Xenical) to go over the counter under the name Alii, people finally have a tested do-it-yourself option. The company has chosen the name Alii to imply that it will work best if allied with a full program of dietary and behavior modification approaches. The FDA appears confident that this drug does not pose significant safety issues. Orlistat is a compound that prevents the absorption of fat.
