I used such a formula, which also contained the herbs bilberry, fenugreek and ginkgo biloba, to treat Frederick's spastic colon and diarrhea." In addition, Dr. Lee prescribed vitamin C and had Frederick take an herbal remedy that helped cleanse his kidneys and decrease stress on his lymph system, which relieved his allergic reactions to dairy products. "In less than one month, Frederick experienced complete improvement," Dr. Lee reports. "He felt great, was off Lomotil, and was able to eat most foods without unpleasant symptoms.

In a 1995 study, Alzheimer's patients received either 80 mg of ginkgo biloba extract or a placebo. Among the patients taking ginkgo, significant improvement was noticed in cognitive function—memory and attention span increased in the first month of supplementation.24 David L. Hoffmann, B.Sc, M.N.I.M.H., of Sebastopol, California, past President of the American Herbalists Guild, reports success using ginkgo with Alzheimer's and senile dementia.
At least three volumes of information on the chemistry, pharmacology, and clinical uses of ginkgo biloba extract have been published.62 ginseng (panax ginseng, oriental ginseng; p. quinquefolius, american ginseng; Ginseng has an ancient history and has accumulated much folklore about its actions and uses. The genus name Panax is derived from the Latin word panacea meaning "cure all." Many of the claims that surround ginseng are exaggerated, but it is clearly an important remedy, receiving attention from researchers around the world.

The treatment of women suffering from idiopathic cyclic oedema with ginkgo biloba extract led to complete correction of the biological anomaly in ten cases receiving oral and five receiving intravenous administration. Ginkgo has promoted hair regrowth in rats.
The administration of ginkgo biloba leaves at doses of 120 mg per day for two months reduced plasma clastogenic activity to control levels when measured on the first day following treatment in workers exposed to high levels of radiation from the Chernobyl accident. Such positive effects lasted for a minimum of seven months. Three months' worth of gingko biloba extract at the same dose led to improvements in some cognitive functions in elderly patients with moderate arterial insufficiency.
Flavonglycosids and 3 mg folic acid over a period of four days experienced significant improvements in nerve function following treatment. Ginkgo has proven effective in relieving symptoms associated with PMS. Both in vitro and in vivo studies showed that sesquiterpene bilobalide, extracted from ginkgo biloba leaves, might be useful for therapy of and prophylaxis against P. carinii infections in humans. Ginkgo has exhibited protective effects against spinal cord injury in rats due to its antioxidant activities. Ginkgo has demonstrated anti-stress activity in rats and mice.
Experimental models of ischemia, oedema, and hypoxia have shown that ginkgo biloba extract reduced vascular, tissu-lar, and metabolic disturbances, along with neurological and behavioral consequences associated with them. Ginseng Ginseng is a potent adaptogenic herb that has been used the world over throughout history. There are several different types of ginseng, all adaptogens, including Korean, Chinese, Siberian, and American. Adaptogenic herbs primarily act as stress fighters by restoring homeostasis. A growing body of peer review literature supports such actions.

Quercetin, a flavone found in many plants and foods, including eucalyptus, ginkgo biloba, and onions, can inhibit the tumor-suppressor protein gene p53, a critical suppressor gene involved in at least half of all cancers, including breast and prostate cancers. This keeps cell growth in check and prevents cancer transformation. Enzyme inhibitors found in plants can block certain enzyme pathways that cancer uses to proliferate. One common cancer enzyme pathway, called lactate dehydrogenase, works by blocking anaerobic glycolysis.

Again, preliminary studies show that ginkgo biloba is most effective in delaying mental deterioration in the early stage of the disease, but does not reverse it. Personal Advice Use it or lose it—Studies in China, Finland, France, Israel, Italy, Sweden, and the United States show that the more educated you are, the less likely you are to get Alzheimer's. The possible explanation? The brain is just like the rest of the body, and if you "exercise" your brain, you stimulate the cells to work harder and become stronger.

In one study, 60 men with impotence caused by arterial atherosclerosis took 60 milligrams of ginkgo biloba extract twice a day. Within 6 months, 50 percent had regained their potency. Another study used an even higher dosage—80 milligrams of extract three times a day. It produced even better results, with 78 percent reporting restored erections. Ginkgo has also been shown to reverse impotence caused by the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Perhaps the best-known member of this family of antidepressants is fluoxetine (Prozac). In some cases, as might be expected, studies funded by companies that make the products tend to show benefits for the supplement, whereas independent studies find no such benefits; studies of ginkgo biloba for memory loss in the elderly are a prime example of such research inconsistencies.21 Although most scientists consider studies that suggest benefits of herbal supplements as preliminary and inconclusive, the products may well help people with conditions that cannot be treated successfully with conventional medicines even if they do so simply through placebo (or other self-healing) effects.
The testing laboratory also found supplements of saw palmetto, ginkgo biloba, and echinacea to contain less of those substances than listed on the product labels.22 So little is known about the interactions among herbal supplements and conventional drugs that anesthesiologists warn patients to stop taking supplements before undergoing surgery. Pharmacists at major drug chains also have begun asking customers about supplement practices and advising them about possible interactions that might be harmful.
Reportedly, the FDA warning letter stated, "We note that ingredients such as echinacea, ginkgo biloba, St. John's wort, cat's claw, kava kava, and spirulina are listed on the labels of several of your products. FDA has not issued a food additive regulation authorizing the use of these ingredients in food. Additionally, we are not aware of a basis for concluding that these ingredients are GRAS for use in conventional food."8 The FDA also had issued similar warnings to Plain's about its Kitchen Prescription soup line (shown in Figure 27).

John's wort, and ginkgo biloba (all herbs we will discuss later). Germany in particular leads the way with research and regulation as well as usage. As Dr. Andrew Weil points out: Germany is way ahead of us. There are many German pharmaceutical companies that make high quality, standardized, stable products. The government has worked out a system of regulations and standardization.... In every pharmacy the window displays were 100 percent natural products: valerian for sleep; peppermint oil for irritable bowel syndrome; ginkgo for blood circulation.
Indeed, research on depression and ginkgo biloba extract has been a secondary offshoot of research on its effects on cerebrovascular efficiency. Subjects in double-blind studies noticed mood improvements along with improvements in areas being studied, such as memory and other markers of mental performance. Still, ginkgo may be most useful for older patients. The effective daily antidepressant dose in one of the studies was 240 milligrams daily—twice the 120-milligram daily dose usually recommended for GBE. This dose may cause headaches or dizziness initially in elderly people.
This herb both prevents and treats senile dementia and related cognitive conditions of the elderly better than many drugs—so effectively, in fact, that ginkgo is the best-selling herbal medicine in Europe and one of the most commonly prescribed botanicals in the world (over 100,000 physicians worldwide wrote over 10 million prescriptions for ginkgo biloba extract in 1989 alone).

This is more challenging than prescribing a specific herb to treat a certain ailment— say, for example, saw palmetto for prostate problems or ginkgo biloba for memory loss. However, it greatly enhances the accuracy and success of an herbal prescription because it takes into account factors other than the presenting ailment that may also affect the client's health. For example, when I treat a woman with breast cancer, I choose an herbal combination that has many functions.

John's Wort and ginkgo biloba piled high at Wal-Mart. The majority of consumers (79 percent in one survey) feel that herbs are safe and probably effective for many conditions currently treated with pharmaceuticals or over-the-counter drugs. And there is not yet an end in sight. A 1998 MarketFacts survey showed that many more Americans would take medicinal herbs if they knew more about them. In this respect Americans are merely catching up with the Germans, Indians, Chinese and many other people who rely on herbs for a good part of their health care.

A number of studies have demonstrated that taking supplements of ginkgo biloba can help patients with Alzheimer's reach near-normal levels of vigilance and performance. You can get ginkgo extract at health food stores. There has also been promising research that's shown that choline, a nutrient essential for the formation of one of the crucial neurotransmitters in the brain, can be helpful in increasing memory. Zinc, a mineral that plays a role in preventing the degeneration of the nerve system, can be useful in fighting Alzheimer's.
Ginkgo biloba: 40 mg. three to four times daily. • Choline: 650 mg. three times daily. • Zinc: 50 mg. daily. IN ADDITION: In one recent study, thirty patients with Alzheimer's took the following supplements daily: 6 g. of evening primrose oil, 90 mg. of zinc sulfate, and 2 mg. of selenium. These patients had significant improvements in performace tests. Another study found that patients who received supplements of L-carnitine had less deterioration in attention span and performance of tasks. They received 2.5 g. of L-carnitine daily for three months followed by 3 g. daily for three months.
The first is the herb ginkgo biloba, which can be helpful for men whose problem stems from diminished blood flow to the penis. You should hope to see some improvement in about two months; some patients regain full potency within six months. You can get ginkgo at health food stores. There are no known harmful side effects. Another natural remedy for impotence is yohimbine, a substance that is derived from the bark of the yohimbe tree in Africa. Yohimbine (available by prescription) is known to dilate surface blood vessels and stimulate the release of norepinephrine. The usual dose is three 5.
