An extract of the ginkgo biloba leaves has been tested and reported to be effective at reducing ischemic symptoms—vascular insufficiency associated with aging and atherosclerosis. ginkgo biloba appears to increase cerebral blood flow and thus help oxygenation; it also may inhibit platelet aggregation. In a study of geriatric patients, ginkgo was shown to reduce symptoms of vertigo, memory loss, tinnitus, and headache. In another study of lower limb claudication symptoms, ginkgo helped reduce pain and improve walking tolerance over the placebo group.

We also asked him to stop drinking alcohol, and prescribed three natural products: ginkgo biloba, ginseng, and argi-nine. Arginine is an amino acid that has an effect similar to Viagra; it raises the levels of a compound called nitric oxide, which is a substance found throughout our bodies that causes a number of important physiological effects. One of these is vasodilation, or enlarging of the blood vessels. Because of this action, nitric oxide can lower blood pressure and improve male erections. By taking arginine, men can do both simultaneously.

A study of the effects of bilobalide, the main constituent of the nonflavone fraction of ginkgo biloba, provided the first direct evidence that bilobalide can protect neurons against oxidative stress. Bilobalide may block the apoptosis in the early stage and then attenuate the elevation of c-Myc, p53, and Bax genes and activation of caspase-3 in cells (Zhou et al. 2000). An article by Yao et al.
As a topical agent, it has been found to help telieve skin conditions, including dermatitis and eczema. ginkgo biloba in combination with beta-glucan has helped to alleviate contact dermati-tis (Castelli et al. 1998). An ingtedient from ginkgo has been shown to have a positive effect on asthma (Mahmoud et al. 2000) and significantly reduces airway hyporeactivity. In another study, the authors concluded that ginkgo was an effective dtug for relieving airway inflammation (Li et al. 1997).

If it can be put down to an arterial blockage, ginkgo biloba, widely regarded as a memory tonic, can help increase circulation, as has been documented in European studies. If you take 240 milligrams (mg) of ginkgo daily, it should relieve impotence due to arterial blockage. ginkgo biloba is best taken as a standardized extract because the constituents are not readily assimilated by the body. It does not break down well with alcohol either so it's not effective as a tincture or crude extract.

The herb ginkgo biloba isn't just great for improving blood flow to the brain and improving memory, it improves blood flow everywhere! Let's find out more about natural remedies for impotence. NATURAL REMEDIES FOR IMPOTENCE Even if you haven't been diagnosed with atherosclerosis (clogged arteries), impotence is nearly always a sign that circulation in the penis isn't as good as it could be. See Chapter Nine on drugs for heart disease for natural remedies for better circulation.
The bioflavonoids in grapeseed extract and ginkgo biloba help strengthen blood vessels and improve blood flow to the extremities. Calcium, long known to be important for bone health, may also help with weight loss, according to recent research by scientists at the University of Vermont. Women who increased their calcium intake by as little as 130 mg a day showed an increased rate of weight loss compared to women whose calcium intake didn't increase. In-depth studies of fat cell function have shown that when calcium intake is too low, a hormone that causes bones to demineralize is released.

Extracts of the herb ginkgo biloba also might be beneficial, though the research has been conflicting. Ginkgo serves as both an antioxidant and as a dilator of blood vessels in the brain, improving blood circulation to neurons. Some research indicates that the anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fish oils also can reduce the risk of neuroinflammation. Given the progressive nature of Alzheimer's disease, the emphasis should be on prevention or reversing its early stages. It is not likely that advanced Alzheimer's disease can be reversed because of extensive damage to brain cells.

By the time Mary brought Jim to see Dick, he was unable to finish sentences and was constantly drifting off to sleep. He was so disoriented that he required 24-hour supervision. Dick treated Jim with a special formula called Clear Mind, which contains a blend of Rhodiola rosea, hydroxycinnamic acid from blueberries, and Rhododendron caucasicum.

Many herbalists and researchers believe it improves one's ability to think and boosts stamina as a result of this increased blood flow. But ginkgo biloba has an additional effect of thinning the blood, which can lead to serious complications if a person is also taking aspirin or Coumadin.17 Many herbs that patients use work very similarly to prescription sedatives such as Ativan, Xanax, and Librium. The two most common herbs are valerian root and Kava Kava.

To aid in healing carpal tunnel, in addition to 50 to 100 mg of vitamin B6 daily you can take ginkgo biloba to improve blood supply to the affected area. Among these are the herb ginkgo biloba and garlic. In addition, animal experiments suggest that food allergies also might irritate the stomach and lead to gastritis and ulcers. An estimated 30 percent of people over age sixty-five suffer from atrophic gastritis, a chronic inflammation of the stomach associated with a wasting away of stomach tissues.

Kleijnen and Knipschild reviewed 40 controlled trials studying the use of ginkgo biloba in cases of "cerebral insufficiency,"3 concluding that although only 8 trials were of "good quality,"78 85 all the trials reviewed, except one,86 showed clinically-relevant positive effects for ginkgo when compared with a placebo.
In an animal study, ginkgo biloba extract was found to be comparable to methylprednisone and more effective than thyroid releasing hormone at providing a protective effect against ischaemic spinal cord injury. This effect was thought to be due to its antioxidant actions.52 In addition, ginkgo has been shown to protect healthy volunteers from the effects of hypoxia.57 Animal studies have confirmed this finding.
For example, in an open trial of 112 patients suffering from symptoms of "chronic cerebral insufficiency" (mean age 71 years) taking 40 mg ginkgo biloba extract three times daily for one year, significant improvements in short-term memory, alertness, mood disturbances, vertigo, headaches and tinnitus were reported.78 A more recent double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 90 patients suffering from "cerebral insufficiency" found that those taking ginkgo scored significantly higher on a variety of tests of cognitive function.
Depression One randomized, placebo-controlled trial with 40 patients diagnosed with resistant depression (aged 51 to 78 years) found that ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) was significantly more effective than placebo. Patients in the trial had shown insufficient improvement on tri- and/or tetracyclic antidepressants for a minimum of three months prior to being enrolled in the trial. During the trial, patients continued to take anti-depressant therapy, but were also given either EGb 761 (80 mg) or placebo three times daily.
The authors concluded that "Ginkgo biloba extract is superior to placebo in the symptomatic treatment of intermittent claudication. However, the size of the overall treatment effect is modest and of uncertain clinical relevance."88 Kleijnen and Knipschild also reviewed 15 placebo-controlled trials which investigated the use of ginkgo extracts in the treatment of intermittant claudication.3 They report that only two were of "acceptable" quality,9197 and that all fifteen indicated positive effects for treatment with ginkgo.

Most of the scientific studies on ginkgo biloba have been done with a 24% standardized extract, not the plain powdered leaf. Capsules of the powdered leaf are also available, but the level of active components is not as consistent as in the standardized product. Capsules of the 24% standardized ginkgo biloba extract are available in 40- to 60-mg sizes. I usually recommend taking about 120 mg per day (two or three capsules depending on the size), although I have sometimes recommended higher doses.

The most important supplements for strong blood vessels are the bioflavonoids, including grape-seed extract, rutin, hesperidin, ginkgo biloba, green tea, and bilberry. Supplements important for healthy, "slippery" blood (follow dosage recommendations for daily vitamins in this book) include magnesium, vitamin B6, folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin E, selenium, N-acetyl cysteine, lysine, and garlic.
