OS Although it is one of America's favorite herbal tea ingredients, chamomile has its most enthusiastic following in Europe, where chamomile tea is served in most restaurants and hotels and is widely used as a mild sedative both for adults and fussy children. In addition to its sedative effects, chamomile helps relieve spasms of smooth muscle tissue, making it useful for gastrointestinal and menstrual cramps. A popular children's herb, chamomile has a long history of use for easing symptoms of colds and flu, calming upset stomachs, and soothing colicky babies.

A lavishly illustrated and superbly designed book that will happily grace your coffee table or herbal tea table. Just be careful you don't go and spoil the fun by killing yourself. Although the artistic design of this book is, as I said, beautiful, the content design is a disaster—and I use that word advisedly. Let's say, for example, that you turn to the section called "The 247 Most Beneficial Plants," which sounds promising. On page 27, you see that the plant known as monkshood (also called aconite) is used medicinally for arthritis, sciatica and neuralgia. Sounds great, doesn't it?

When these patients were treated with the herbal tea, they too supposedly showed dramatic improvement. We have no details on these cases, but word spread. It should be emphasized that then and later on, Rene Caisse never charged for the treatment, although she occasionally took small gifts of gratitude. Dr. Fisher reasoned that if oral administration was so good, then an injectable form would be even better. And so they injected it directly into the tongue of a man from Lyons, New York, who was suffering from oral cancer. The immediate reaction was unsettling.

For this reason you might want to add a little of all three to an herbal tea or broth. The trinity roots are not good for children, because garlic and onion are sexual stimulants and ginger is extremely pungent. They are fine to use from puberty on. Chilies include cayenne, red peppers, jalapeno, habanero, and other hot varieties. They have actions similar to those of the trinity roots. In addition, they are exceptionally antiviral—the best broad-spectrum, widely available, well-tolerated antiviral around. Jalapenos appear to be particularly antiviral for some reason.

Thirty-three infants took the herbal tea powder dissolved in water (the amount of the powder was not specified) and 36 infants received placebo. During the first 7 days of the randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, no treatment was administered, but during the next 7 days, the babies were treated when colic symptoms were observed. Doses of up to 150 ml were given, no more than three times daily. At the end of the study, colic was completely relieved in significantly more infants in the treatment group than in the placebo group (19 infants compared with 9).

What he gave her was a pleasant-tasting herbal tea, which she was instructed to drink twice a day. He also gave her the formula and instructed her on its preparation. Supposedly the breast tumors gradually diminished, she never had a recurrence, and was 80 years old at the time Rene Caisse met her (306). The woman had been effectively healed of her cancer. At least that is the story. Needless to say, nurse Caisse was intrigued. The breast of the woman was scarred but no longer cancerous. Caisse asked for the formula and the woman complied.
There are instances in which cancer patients seem to have damaged their livers by taking herbal tea. Some "cancer remedies" contain cancer-promoting substances. So not everything natural is safe or good for you. In fact, some of the herbs discussed in this book are deadly poisons. A writer's nightmare is the desperate patient who misunderstands all the warnings and caveats and decides to brew up a little Conium maculatum (hemlock) to treat his malignancy. Gentle reader, I have two words for you. Please. Don't.

When you're suffering from symptoms, take hot showers and hot baths. Tent a towel over your head and inhale deeply above a sink filled with hot water a few times a day. • Use warm compresses on your nose and eyes to relieve pain. • Use pressure to relieve pain and stimulate circulation: Press the top of your nose on either side between two fingers for a few minutes and then release.

If the mixture is too strong for you, feel free to cut it by adding water or an appropriate herbal tea. There's a wide choice of teas said to be good for colds. My own favorite is camomile, but others swear by lemon balm, boneset (particularly good when fever is present), elder, pennyroyal (no more than one cup) and vervain, which Kloss calls "one of the most wonderful gifts of God in the healing of diseases" and recommends to be taken by the hot cupful every hour for fevers and colds.

Making Tea There are many ways to make an herbal tea or broth. The two most common are infusions and decoctions. For an infusion you steep the herb in watet that has already boiled; for a decoction you simmer or boil the herb itself. Infusions are best for delicate flowers, soft leaves, berries, and herbs with strong odors or volatile oils. Examples would be nettle leaves, passionflower, chamomile, or coltsfoot. To make an infusion, pour boiled water over herbs in a container and seal the container tightly (this will prevent volatile oils from escaping).

An excellent formula for colon cleansing is a drink made from ground flax seeds, psyllium seeds, and bentonite, which is a liquid clay. "Clay absorbs toxins," says Lombardi. This is another good herbal tea for helping the immune system. Also helpful are goldenseal, bearberry, Oregon grape, German chamomile, aloe vera, rosemary, ginger, alfalfa, red clover, and fennel. COLON THERAPY. "My battle with Candida lasted a long time," says colon therapist Tovah Finman-Nahman. "I tried everything, including a strict diet, antifungals, and vitamin C drips. But I never got it under control until I started doing colonics. Then I saw quick results. The gas and the bloating went away, and my chronic fatigue amazingly disappeared.

It is used in the form of an infusion (one teaspoon of the crushed crude drug from the leaves and flowers to one cup water) taken in the morning and evening. herbal tea mixtures made from Hawthorn, Balm, Valerian and Mistletoe can be recommended for their combined, soothing and hypotensive effect. Extracts from Hawthorn are components of numerous commercial preparations such as drops, pills, and injections. Midland Hawthorn (1) is a thorny shrub or tree reaching a height of up to ten metres. It generally grows in scrub and forest margins at lower, warmer elevations.
The drugs from Coltsfoot are components of numerous herbal tea mixtures manufactured for the treatment of chest colds. Even though the drug is in great demand the supply from wild sources is sufficient. Coltsfoot is a small perennial herb that spreads rapidly by means of the rhizomes with long runners. It grows abundantly in bare and waste ground, by roadsides, in ditches, rubbish dumps and in fields from lowland to mountain elevations. Early in spring scaly stems terminated by solitary golden-yellow flowerheads (1) grow from the flower buds.
It should be taken in small drafts, the dosage being three to five cups daily. A herbal tea mixture of equal parts of lime, elderberry and chamomile flowers is very effective in inducing perspiration. Limes (1) are large trees with a rather short trunk and large spherical crown. Solitary limes are an important feature of the landscape in the temperate regions of Eurasia. They are also widely cultivated. The leaves are asymmetrically veined, sharply serrate, dark green above and greyish green below, with rust-coloured hairs in the axils of the veins. The flowering period is from June till July.
The drug from the flowers is an ingredient of certain herbal tea mixtures to which it gives an attractive colour. Blackthorn is a spreading, many-branched, spiny shrub reaching a height of three metres, which often forms dense thickets or spreading masses. It grows on shrubby hillsides, forest margins and in woodland clearings from lowland to mountain elevations. The flowers (1) appear before the leaves (2), which are relatively small. They generally open from March to April, depending on the location and altitude, and often completely cover whole branches.
The drug is also recommended as an ingredient in herbal tea mixtures that 'purify the blood'. These are taken as a preventive therapy mainly in spring to correct the unsuitable composition of body fluids that might otherwise lead to illness and the accumulation of the causes of arteriosclerosis. Besides Chicory root, these tea mixtures contain the stems and leaves of nettle, birch leaves, and the flowers of elder. The abovementioned related vegetable plants, mainly because of their vitamin content and pleasant bitter substances, are, moreover, important ingredients in a proper diet.
