Journal Travel Medicine 11:157-9, 2004] Hulda Clark would have everyone undergo herbal therapy to rid their body of flukes. Clark disseminates half truths. Liver flukes don't cause all cancers. If so, cancer would arise at any age with parasitic infection. Instead, cancer is largely an age-related phenomenon.

HERBALISM
This condition responds well to herbal therapy. The symptoms of gastric flu may include nausea and abdominal pain, or share some of the other symptoms of gastritis; any of the herbs recommended for this condition (see p. 401) may work to relieve symptoms until the infection associated with gastric flu is controlled by the body. Given that gastric flu is usually due to an infection, herbs that help the body eliminate the infection by killing the bacteria or viruses may be useful. Two of the most common herbs with a reputation for this are goldenseal and barberry. |

Shock is a medical emergency, and herbal therapy is not indicated for this condition. However, herbal remedies may be helpful in assisting the body to recover from shock. Appropriate treatments will depend on the type of shock experienced, for example, septic or hypovolemic. Consult a medical herbalist, as this is a complicated and severe situation. The herbs below may be recommended as they are supportive and act as anti-oxidants for the circulatory system.
Bilberry: This herb has no side effects and is packed with antioxidants. |

A randomized double-blind study compared the saw palmetto/nettle combination to the standard BPH dmg finasteride in 543 patients with BPH Stages I—II. The herbal therapy and dmg therapy proved similarly effective in all measures: urinary flow rate, urination time,
IPSS scores, and patients' quality of life assessments. Both therapies increased in effectiveness over a period of months. For example, the average IPSS score in the herbal therapy group declined from 11.3 to 8.2 after 24 weeks and to 6.5 after 48 weeks; in the finasteride group it declined from 11.8 to 8.0 after 24 weeks and to 6. |

Secondly, wholistic herbal therapy is appropriate to use in almost all conditions, either by itself or as an adjunct to other methods. Because mild herbs do not interfere with chemical drugs, they can be taken to assist modern medical procedures, from surgery and hospitalization to the intake of daily medicines. herbal therapy can thus be used in complex, serious conditions or in more simple situations.
When using herbal therapy to heal an illness, however, it is important to know when it is not working and other help is needed. |

While there have been few studies on herbal therapy for bursitis, most practitioners would consider using antiinflammatory herbs that have proven useful in conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (page 387). Authorities now consider American ginseng the most evidence-based herbal therapy for type 2 diabetes.19 Dr. Vuksan's team has determined that American ginseng works by the stimulation of pancreatic beta cells with a subsequent increase in insulin secretion. It also has significant antioxidant properties and improves cognitive function. American ginseng has also been shown to possess nerve protection and regeneration properties. This could prove to be valuable in diabetes where peripheral and autonomic nerve damage so often occurs. |
