A lot of herbs, especially those with strong, pungent oils, tend to have these kinds of properties. oregano certainly falls into that family as well. There are some companies out there making potent oregano extracts which can be used to enhance your overall health, including enhancement of immune system function.
What about the claims regarding blood sugar, cortisol, and insulin metabolism? Simply put, holy basil helps regulate blood sugar in a way similar to cinnamon. |

Oregano is one of the best, and oregano oil as a supplement is highly useful in a number of supportive health roles.
As with virtually all cancers, it's also important to obtain adequate amounts of sunlight on your skin so that you produce vitamin D (a potent anti-cancer medicine made naturally in your own skin). This will boost your absorption of calcium and other nutrients that also play a supportive role in preventing cervical cancer.
This is one of the few times in which conventional medicine's expertise as a "technician" is valuable to the long term health of women. |

To make the vegetables more digestible and delicious-tasting, add spices and herbs such as turmeric, coriander, cumin, cardamom, fennel, basil, oregano and thyme. (See your food chart for those best for you.) Add about 1-2 teaspoons of fat per serving such as coconut oil, olive oil, butter, or another oil that is compatible with your body type. Adding some unrefined salt and perhaps a small piece of vegetable bouillon, coconut milk, or other natural condiment will further enhance the flavor of the vegetables. |

FOOD CURES
Celery for High Blood Pressure
HERE ARE TEN WORDS you probably haven't heard your doctor say in a while: "Take four celery sticks and call me in the morning." But if you have high blood pressure, that's exactly what you should do.
Now let's be clear: Celery alone isn't going to "cure" hypertension. But peer-reviewed research has found that eating four sticks of celery a day lowers blood pressure. |

Since they live on sugar, an "anti-yeast" diet—something like the early stages of the Atkins Diet, with no sugar, bread, pasta, rice, cereal, or even fruit for a couple of weeks—is just the ticket. WORTH KNOWING
In homeopathy, oregano is used to increase sexual excitability. It's also really, really good on pizza.
Parsley
If you've ever chewed on a sprig of parsley after a meal (and before kissing your date), you've experienced its ability to freshen the breath firsthand. What you might not know is that it has the same ability to "freshen" the whole system.
Parsley is known primarily for its detoxification (and deodorizing) properties. It's the world's most popular herb. The Greeks wore parsley crowns at their banquets to stimulate their appetite. |

Season Your Foods with Herbs and Spices
Culinary herbs—garlic, basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, dill, saffron, and others—are among the most nutrient dense of all food ingredients. They are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and many herbs have been shown to improve blood sugar. Because culinary herbs are used in relatively small amounts, these health-promoting nutrients will provide only modest benefits, but they will contribute to the broader nutritional advantages of eating healthy foods.
Practical tip: Processed and packaged foods tend to have large amounts of added salt. |
| Asparagus, vinegar, olive oil, lemon juice, onion, oregano, basil, salt, pimento, garlic, black peppercorns.

| Sauteing allows you to season the food while you're cooking (such as sprinkling basil and oregano on chicken) or to add a sauce (such as pesto) when the meat is almost cooked. You can also marinate the meat before sauteing it.
How to Pan-Fry
Pan-frying is very similar to sauteing, but we tend to think of it involving relatively larger pieces of meat or fish, such as a boneless chicken breast or salmon fillet. In addition, pan-frying may use a lower temperature and may be particularly suited for cooking a chicken breast that will subsequently be used to make chicken salad. |
| When the chicken is about half-cooked, about 2 minutes, add the garlic, basil, and oregano. Or, instead of these herbs, add some Caper Sauce or Pesto (see the recipes on pages 160 and 161). Cook the chicken for 2 to 3 minutes more, remove the pan from the heat, and serve.
Roasted Whole Chicken (Serves 3-4)
You will need a roasting pan with a removable wire rack to properly roast a chicken. The chicken will rest on the rack, and the pan will catch the drippings, which you will use for a sauce. |

Six months from now, it might be difficult to recognize catnip from oregano! I also like to write the Latin name of the plant on the storage label. After you've written and said them a few times, these beautiful, poetic names become part of your memories. It is also a good idea to write the date of when you purchased or dried the plant material.
Many herb books will tell you that dried leaves and flowers keep for one year and roots and barks for two to three years. However, taste, color, and smell are the most reliable indicators of potency. |

The Salt Issue
Limit your intake of normal table salt. It is processed sodium chloride and is as bad for you as any other processed food. On the other hand, sea salt in its natural form is essential for good cellular function. It contains trace minerals, including iodine—the mineral usually added to table salt, important for the health of the thyroid gland—in a concentration that is more usable by the body. |
