Notes about Licorice root*:Licorice should not be used by people with diabetes, high blood pressure, liver or kidney disorders, or low potassium levels. It should not be used daily for more than 4 to 6 weeks.
It is average for weight loss assistance. (1)
Is contraindicated in pregnant women, as well as those with liver and kidney disorders. (7)
Make sure you get real licorice and not licorice made with anise, and keep in mind that too much licorice can raise blood pressure and is not recommended for pregnant women. (11)
Licorice root has average anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antispasmodic, anti-stress and expectorant qualities, and is a gentle laxative. (12)
Licorice contains substances similar to the adrenal cortical hormones. It is very beneficial in treating adrenal insufficiency. (13)
It is probably the most used herb in the Chinese materia medica, because of its harmonizing effects on other herbs. (15)
