Of all the very old civilizations that developed herbal medicine, those in China and India mean the most to us today, for the simple reason that we still use herbal remedies from their extremely sophisticated medical systems. ginseng is a shining example.
Later, in classical times, when Greeks and Romans were laying the foundation for Western medicine, medicinal plants remained key. Hippocrates listed some 400 of them, many of which, such as garlic, hawthorn, and thyme, are still important today. Galen, often hailed as the father of modern medicine, connected plant healing process. |

Participants took multivitamin/multimineral capsules with 40 mg concentrated and standardized ginseng or placebo twice a day. On the 1st, 21st, and 42nd days of the study, subjects recorded changes on a questionnaire, describing their symptoms from a list of 20 common complaints related to fatigue (for example, "difficulty in getting up in the morning," "feeling exhausted," and "lack of motivation").
By the end of the trial, there was a statistically significant improvement in the total "fatigue score" in the test group compared with the placebo group, with 5. |

Results of this study showed that the administration of 10 mg/kg of ginsenoside Rgl over three straight days prior to sheep red cell exposure in mice produced an increase in the number of spleen plaque-forming cells, the titers of sera hemagglutinins and the number of antigen-reactive T-cells. Results also showed that ginsenoside Rg 1 increased the number of T-helper cells relative to the total T-cell number and the splenocyte natural killer activity. |

Results of this study showed that administration of 250 mg/kg ip per day of Astragalus polysaccharide and 50 mg/kg sc of ginsenosides of ginseng stems and leaves from 0-3 days posttrauma significantly elevated the lymphocytes membrane fluidity of plasmalemma, mitochondria and microsome from spleen, thymus and mesenteric lymph nodes in traumatized mice. Results also showed the treatment reduced lipid peroxide levels, and increased superoxide dismutase activities in serum and lymphocytes from such animals.

Known as a feel-good herb to boost vitality, ginseng's ability to regulate blood sugar suggests that it may be useful in helping people lose weight, says Robert Rountree, M.D., a holistic physician at the Helios Health Center in Boulder, Colorado.
"Experts in the field of bariatrics (obesity) feel that continual high levels of the hormone insulin lead to obesity," he explains. When you eat a starchy meal or drink a sugary beverage (which are carbohydrates), your blood sugar rises, and your pancreas reacts by releasing insulin to bring it back down. |
