Such patients can be found at the pharmacy every day over at the display of ginseng root or buying a book about the melatonin miracle. Others have religious or ethical objections to taking drugs. Most doctors are skilled in handling the wide variety of patient attitudes. However, to make this partnership work, the essential first step is to tell the doctor exactly where you fall on this spectrum. Don't imagine that everyone is like you or that the doctor can read your mind. For the system to give you even some of what you want, it's up to you to express clearly your attitude and expectations.

Of the herbs he used, ginseng is believed good for the heart, sex glands, stomach, nerves, and blood. Fo-Ti-Tieng's main value (among many valuable properties) seems to be against senility. A Hindu sage named Nanddo Narain, at 107, claimed that Fo-Ti-Tieng provides a missing ingredient in man's diet which prevents disease and decay. Fo-Ti-Tieng has been called "the Elixir of Life," containing Youth Vitamin X.1 Olive Oil and Distilled Water!

Herbs that have been shown to directly enhance interferon activity include ginseng root, garlic bulb, mistletoe, ashwagandha root, noni fruit (Morinda citrifolia), and numerous herbal formulas. Interleukins are proteins that stimulate white blood cell activity. There are dozens of different kinds of interleukins. Think of them as immune system coffee. Interleukin-1 helps produce fever. Interleukin-2, also known as T-cell growth factor, is very important.
I advise using relatively small amounts of ginseng or astragalus roots at first and put more emphasis on honey-fried licorice and dioscorea root, then adjust accordingly. • Cough, cough with blood, shortness of breath (especially after lung, diaphragm, or esophogeal cancer): Use a formula of glehnia root (sha shen or Adenophora tetra-phylla), scrophularia root (xuan shen or S. ningpoensis), licorice root, apricot seed, ophiopogon root (mai men dong), rubia root (qian cao gen or R. cordifolia), and cordyceps mushroom.
Injections of extracts of ginseng root and astragalus root were used with chemotherapy on 176 human cases of digestive tract tumors. Results showed that in comparison to controls, the injections reduced the toxic effects of the chemotherapy, significantly protected white blood cells, and reduced failure due to lowered WBC counts. In follow-up experiments on animals the injections also prolonged survival times (Li NQ, 1992). • A placebo-controlled double-blind clinical study was done on primary liver cancer using TCM tonic herbs and radiation therapy.
Nai-shing then prepared for her a simple tonic of astragalus root, ginseng root, and white atractylodes to tonify the vital energy, some dry ginger and purified aconite to warm the body, and some dang gui root and cooked rehmannia root to nourish the blood. Within two weeks Dina's energy increased dramatically, and she continued to improve steadily during a 4-month course of herbs. She recovered completely within 6 months. Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia, a condition characterized by chronic muscle pain, is a sister disease to CFS.
For example, ginseng and astragalus roots are more heating and energizing, while ashwa-gandha root and ganoderma mushroom are more calming and neutral in energy. A second prong of treatment is the use of herbs known to reduce low-grade fevers. Such herbs include isatis root and leaves, raw rehmannia, qing hao herb (Artemisia annua), bupleurum root, dandelion root, tulsi, cat's claw (una de gato or Uncaria tomentosa), el-derberrry, pau d'arco inner bark (Tabebuia species), and wild indigo root tincture (Baptisia tinctoria).

Your adrenals, which really take a beating from stress, can be strengthened with green drinks, sea vegetables, licorice, bee pollen, royal jelly, and ginseng. Many herbs have antioxidant properties that help combat free radical damage related to an immune system weakened by stress. Garlic and ginkgo biloba are examples. A detailed discussion of these wonder herbs follows in chapter 5. Other herbs have antioxidant-like qualities in that they have a major influence on the nervous system. Catnip, hops, valerian root, kava kava, and passion flower are just a few for you to consider.

For spleen and stomach qi deficiency with poor appetite, diarrhea, and loose stools, combine 9 grams each of dioscorea, atractylodes bai zhu, poria, and ginseng ren shen with 3 grams of prepared licorice and 5 jujube dates. • For qi deficiency with symptoms of low appetite, combine 9 grams each of pseudostellaria, dioscorea, codonopsis, and atractylodes with sprouted millet and barley to the consistency of porridge.
In all systems of traditional medicine, one who is weak and unable to digest food is given thin rice porridge, ideally with the addition of ginseng. Meat soups, such as chicken soup, are also good. The weaker one is, the longer the food should be cooked. Rice porridge, called congee, cooked with jujube dates and other herbs according to the condition of the patient, is ideal during illness. Pressed Salad Salads are not considered an important part of diet in traditional cultures.
Various formulas can be used, but again, the representative formula is Dang Gui Four (Si Wu Tang), with ginseng (ren shen) added if there is qi deficiency and cinnamon bark (rou gui) and prepared aconite (ju zi) added if there is internal coldness. Herbs that invigorate the blood are also used. Fluid Conditions FLUID DEFICIENCY The primary characteristic of fluid deficiency is dryness, which can manifest on the skin or lips or in the throat or reproductive organs. There may also be dry constipation or dry tongue with a thready, rapid pulse.

So I threw in "pinches" of this and that, a little ginseng here and a little dami-ana there. But the real "heart" of my energy formula rested in this trio of herbs: club moss, Jamaican ginger root, and gotu kola. The company made up about a hundred bottles of 60 capsules each and passed them out to their employees, family members, relatives, friends, and neighbors. Our research center directed the sampling of some volunteers. Just about everyone who took two capsules on an empty stomach (very, very important) with a full 8 fl.oz.

Aphrodisiacs include: damiana, false unicorn, ginseng, angelica, astragalus, kava kava and burdock. Astringents: Substances that have a constricting or binding effect. They are commonly used to check hemorrhages and secretions, and to treat swollen tonsils and hemorrhoids. The main herbal astringents contain tannins, which are found in most plants, especially in tree barks. Important astringents include: bayberry bark, white oak bark, yellow dock, uva ursi, calendula, myrrh, horsetail, juniper berries, prince's pine, stoneroot, squawvine and witch hazel.

See on the enhancement of Natural Killer cells with the herbs Echinacea and ginseng, I did not find any standard Medline references to such work with HANSI (346). Many other claims are made for HANSI in both the Townsend Letter article and another anonymous article circulated by the American distributor (9). There has been little research so far on HANSI. I could find no articles on the topic of HANSI out of nine million citations in Medline. In July, 1990, Hirschmann opened his first clinic in Buenos Aires and hired doctors to begin treating human cancer patients with his products.

When echinacea was combined with an energetically appropriate herb for vegetarians, however, such as Siberian ginseng, its effectiveness for vegetarians was regained. Michael had a further reason to bring energetics to Western herbs. He also saw the incredible importance of diet and its influence on illness and the effectiveness of Western herbs. Just as traditional medicinal systems throughout the world developed theoretical foundations for using herbs, they also did this with food. Michael began teaching the use of an energetically balanced diet along with herbs.
In addition to the herbs mentioned above, other alteratives include: alfalfa, aloe vera, angelica, burdock root, comfrey, goldenseal, gota kola, marshmal-low, nettles, Oregon grape root, plantain, sassafras, uva ursi, chrysanthemum, dong quai, ginseng, ho shou wu, lycii, peony and rehmannia. Analgesics: Herbs that are taken to relieve pain without causing loss of consciousness. Some analgesics are also antispasmodics, relieving pain by reducing cramping in muscles; these include cramp bark and dong quai, which are used to reduce menstrual cramps and associated pain.
Stimulants include: anise, cayenne, black pepper, cinnamon, echinacea, ginseng, sarsaparilla, dandelion, elecampane, angelica, ginger, yarrow, rosemary, garlic, onion, juniper berries, sage, pennyroyal, bayberry bark and astragalus. Stomachics: See Tonics. Tonics: Herbs that promote the functions of the systems of the body. Most tonics have general effects on the whole body, but also have a marked effect on a specific system. Vulneraries: Herbs that encourage the healing of wounds by promoting cell growth and repair.

However, do not take ginseng or licorice if you have high blood pressure. In general, only use these two herbs if your Cortisol levels are low. If your Cortisol levels are very low or you are not improving over a period of four to six months with the all-natural approach, you may need a prescription of hydrocortisone, a synthetic drug whose molecular structure is identical to human Cortisol. The typical recommended dosage is 5-10 mg, two to four times daily. I recommend that you start with a low dose and gradually increase until you feel an increase in energy.
This is not the case in Chinese medicine, where numerous herbs, such as ginseng, are used to prevent and treat fatigued states. Even so, fatigue is mysterious and paradoxical, and therefore difficult to understand. For example, it is not routinely present in all cases of chronic hepatitis C, HIV positive, and other chronic viral illnesses such as Epstein-Barr virus. On the other hand, fatigue can be a profound symptom in some of these cases. It is universal in mononucleosis and other acute viruses but absent in others.
Many Chinese herbs have immune-enhancing and adaptogenic properties, such as astragalus and ginseng, and are included in step 8, the chapter on Chinese medicine. Many nutrients also have immune-modulating effects, such as coenzyme Q10, selenium, zinc, and vitamin B6, and have already been discussed in the chapter on antioxidants. However, one vitamin, folic acid, and a trace mineral, germanium, that I have not discussed, are worth mentioning here for their immune-enhancing properties. Folic Acid: Folic acid, or folate, is necessary for DNA synthesis.
For example: ginseng and wu jia pi/radix acan-thopanax (Acanthopanax senticosus) have been used to protect against damage to the immune system caused by radiation treatments during cancer therapy. Formulas containing Chai Hu/'radix bupleuri (Bupkurum falcatum) have been used to enhance the effects of steroids and at the same time reduce the immune-damaging side effects of these drugs.
Many Chinese herbs, such as ginseng and astragalus, have powerful immune-modulating effects. A considerable number of them have been shown to induce production of natural interferons, including bupleurum, astragalus, and lithospermum (Lithospermum crythrorhi-zon). Additionally, in our age of rampant cancers, AIDS, and worldwide chronic hepatitis, extensive screening of Chinese herbs has taken place for their immune-modulating effects and antiviral activity.
One of the most important contributions of Chinese herbs to world medicine is the use of adaptogens—substances (like ginseng) that improve homeostasis, reduce the effects of stress, restore organ energy reserves, and enhance hormone balance. In dysfunctional immunological states, chronic underlying homeostatic disturbances occur, and no drug can put all the pieces of the immunological system back together again. In such cases, the long-term ingestion of traditional Chinese tonic remedies with adaptogenic properties is not only helpful, but may be essential to complete recovery.

Taking ginseng three hours before or after a vitamin C supplement, or C-rich foods, should correct this. (Also, taking a time-release vitamin C supplement makes counteractions less likely.) ABOUT GARLIC Garlic has been found to contain substances that reduce high blood pressure, help combat diabetes by cleaning the blood of excess glucose (which is not to suggest it be used to replace medically prescribed methods), increase immunity to bronchial infections, aid in fighting certain types of cancer, lower blood cholesterol levels, and help in the prevention of heart disease.

For example, some individuals may use ginseng, which is good for "energy," when TCM practitioners would find it contraindicated because of its potential for exhausting an already overtaxed system. Similarly, such diagnostic subtleties are trampled upon when Western thrill-seekers use ephedra-laced products like Herbal Ecstasy to get high rather than for its mild decongestant properties. It's been safely used for centuries in China, but there it is administered by experienced practitioners.
