Imagine that you are a feather floating in the air. You become more and more relaxed as you drift downward toward the ground. You finally glide to the ground, gently and sofdy touching down. As you're lying there, ad stress has left your body, and you feel totady and completely relaxed, says Dennis Gersten, M.D., a psychiatrist and publisher of Atlantis, a bi-monthly imagery newsletter. He recommends using this imagery for two to five minutes three times a day.

Other herbal teas useful for the flu are slippery elm bark for cough, fever, and sore throat; eucalyptus for congestion and cough; horehound and cherry bark for cough. Sage tea will increase kidney function and help to expel quantities of extra fluid from the body. |

Endurance Capabilities
Ginseng is best known for its anti-fatigue, energy-giving properties. But very few people know that it must be taken for awhile in order to gradually build such physical endurance, rather than expecting anything sudden to happen from only short-term use.

| The famous French herbalist, Maurice Messegue, has often used it in place of ginseng to help couples retrieve their married bliss. He advises them to sprinkle powdered savory on all their meat dishes. For impotent men and frigid women he advises them to run the base of their spine with a decoction of savory and fenugreek.
In 1 qt. boiling water, simmer 3-1/2 tbsps. fenugreek seed for 5 mins., covered. Remove from heat and add 2 handfuls of savory. Steep an additional 50 mins. Drink 2 cups before going to bed and apply to the bottom of the back as well. |

Ginseng powder and extract is used throughout Asia to overcome sexual weariness. Another Asian remedy to overcome sexual depletion is to eat the meat of 6 walnuts each day for 2 months. In Louisiana, men restore themselves with a three-week diet that includes eating a handful of fresh-cooked shrimp and a small shot of brandy each day. Other foods of the sea are excellent for changing sexual fatigue to sexual energy: eat crab, lobster, shrimp, oysters, mussels, ocean fish, and seaweed such as kelp and dulse. In ancient Europe, oatmeal was a favored diet to repair sexual apathy. |

The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine (the other Chinese treatise cited earlier) teaches that chi is the life energy that permeates the entire universe, this planet, and every living thing therein. There are cycles to everything, a constant rhythmic shifting, if you will, from one pole to its opposite. And just as every process of nature shows cyclicity, every process has a polar nature. Though oneness is the primary law of the universe, this fundamental two-dimensional view of nature generates the concept of yin and yang. |

As ancient as this discovery was, this basic hot and cold relationship of plants and diseases is still a fundamental principle of all natural healing. Of course, there is much more to it than this, and as with any complex system, it is made complex by superimposing one clear and simple thing upon another over and over until it seems to defy our total comprehension. Thus the path of the herbalist may also encompass the laboratory with the identification and extraction of certain vital biochemical agents found in herbs. |

Dr. Hans Selye gave further definition to the concept and won a Nobel prize for his work in this area. Selye coined the term adaptations energy, stating that when this energy is depleted, performance is limited and resistance to disease is reduced.
In order to be classified as an adaptogen, a plant must:
• Raise nonspecific resistance to disease (cell-mediated immunity)
• Be capable of normalizing bodily functions even in disease states
• Be nontoxic and completely harmless; safe for ingestion for long-term, preventive/nutritive consumption
Not all tonics are adaptogens. |
