How Herbs Are Sold
Medicinal herbs are available at health food stores, herb shops, supplement outlets, some pharmacies and supermarkets and through mailorder catalogs (see Resources). They're marketed in so many different forms that many people become confused. Here's what's available.

Unfortunately, the labels of herbal preparations often don't say much else. That's because an herb must be approved as a "drug" in the eyes of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to specify its medical or therapeutic use. Herb marketers must spend on the order of $200 million proving to the agency's satisfaction that the herb in question is safe and effective enough to justify a medicinal claim. | John Heinerman See book keywords and concepts | Many of the herbal preparations they employ are prepared through an elaborate system known as homeopathy. A simplified method of duplicating the same tincture in your home for hoarseness and sore throat is as follows: mix 1/2 teaspoon of powdered arum root with 3/4 cup alcohol and let stand for ten days, shaking at least once per day.
Afterwards, strain and pour the liquid into another bottle suitable for storage in a cupboard. Put about ten drops in 2 oz. of distilled water and gargle vigorously with the solution. Repeat every hour as necessary. | Michael Lerner See book keywords and concepts | Yoga, breathing practices, and meditation are also employed in a therapeutic program, as are herbal preparations. Other components of a treatment program may be emotional release (the recognition, understanding, and release of negative emotions), therapeutic vomiting, and the use of purgatives, enemas, and fasting.12
Unlike Chinese medicine, Ayurveda is not recognized in the United States as a licensed treatment modality. Various training programs in Ayurveda do exist in the United States, but state laws vary as to whether practitioners can use their training to treat patients. | Thomas Bartram See book keywords and concepts | The term also refers to products, including herbal preparations made without sugar, starch, salt, wheat, yeast or artificial preservatives: suitable for vegetarians.
HYPOCALCAEMIA. Lower than normal level of calcium in the blood. Due to (a) Vitamin D deficiency, (b) underactivity of parathyroid glands.
Muscular spasms may follow from tetany or seizure. Babies fed on cow's milk may be at risk. Symptoms: breathlessness, vomiting, spasm, convulsions. The calcium balance is governed by hormones from the parathyroid gland. Absorption of the mineral depends upon dietary calcium and Vitamin D. | | Bournemouth 1995
Thomas Bartram end of the 19th century the physician and the pharmacist shared with the herbalist a practical working knowledge of many herbal preparations and their therapeutic powers. But with the growth of scientific medicine in the 20th century medical reliance on herbal remedies has progressively diminished, although the fund of knowledge of true herbalists like Thomas Bartram continued to grow. Today, however, we hear repeatedly of threats to the natural world and its flora and fauna, alerting us to the precious heritage of herbal medicine. | | Pioneered herbal preparations in a base of Candida utilis yeast. Yeast is fed with wild herbs plasmolysed in a fermentation process. Efficacy of products demonstrated by scientific experiment. Under special growing conditions the principles are absorbed by the yeast cells in the process of multiplication or are bound to the cell surface. They are then metabolised, i.e., undergo chemical change.
Candida utilis is a highly active wild yeast able to synthesise its own vitamins. More than 90 selected plant species from 14 countries are used in Biostrath preparations. | | Vendors of fine herbal preparations and publishers of a number of booklets including: Gateway to Health and Famous Book of Herbs. Following the company's 'take-over' from Booker Health Foods in 1987, it passed to The London Herb and Spice Co. Ltd., who maintain it as a brand leader in the health food trade.

1968, so great was the threat to the practice of herbal medicine and sale of herbal preparations, that the profession and trade were galvanised into mobilising opposition. Thus, the British Herbal Medicine Association was formed in 1964. In the ensuing struggle, important concessions were won that ensured survival.
The BHMA is recognised by the Medicines Control Agency as the official representative of the profession and the trade. | James A. Duke, Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Fortunately, they're rarely, if ever, sold in stores that carry well-labeled, commercially marketed herbal preparations. But they're listed here anyway—just in case. None of these herbs should be taken internally, though some are safe for external use (arnica, for example). | | As I mentioned earlier, I prefer standardized extracts over other herbal preparations because they indicate that I'm getting a specific amount of one or more of an herb's medicinal compounds. If a product is standardized, its label should say so. The label should also indicate which of an herb's active ingredients have been used for standardization. A well-researched product will declare that it contains a certain percentage of an herb's main medicinal compound.
For example, St. John's wort has for years been standardized to contain 0.3 percent hypericin. | Michael Castleman See book keywords and concepts | Some herb companies offer standardized doses in packaged herbal preparations. But when you're using bulk herbs, you can't be certain how much of the active constituents are in the herb. Herb potency depends on such things as plant genetics, growing conditions, maturity at harvest, time in storage and preparation method. Also, some of the more expensive herbs are sometimes adulterated by unscrupulous dealers.
Even with all this uncertainty, in controlled doses, herbs cause fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals. |
