Unfortunately, it's greasy and hard to digest, so it is rarely used alone, but rather in formulas, with digestion-stimulating herbs like cinnamon, cardamom, or ginseng. nettle also has a reputation for being nourishing to the kidney, and sarsaparilla is a cooling herb that washes out the whole urinary tract. Sarsaparilla was boiled alone or with sassafras root, then fermented with sugar and yeast for a few hours to make root beer.

Supplement doses may need to be increased, such as extra quercetin or nettle, to manage allergic responses. Occasionally, someone is sensitive to a specific supplement. This is unpredictable, so be on the lookout for reactions. The most valuable supplements include: AM PM Basic Multiple Formula.............................................3...........3 Vitamin C 1000 mg...................................................3...........3 Quercetin 400 mg......................................................1...........1 Pyridoxine (B6) 250 mg............................................
How to take The amount of nettle used for prostate enlargement ranges from 250 to 750 mg per day. Similar doses have helped patients with allergies, usually in divided doses, taken as needed for hay fever when the symptoms occur. Feverfew Feverfew has a long history of use for the treatment of fevers, headaches and joint inflammation. Active principles in feverfew are called sesquiterpenes, such as parthenolide. These inhibit prostaglandin production, leading to a reduction of inflammation. It is this anti-inflammatory property that may help treat arthritis.

Because nettle and pygeum relieve BPH symptoms differently, they're often used in combination with each other or with saw palmetto for the best results, says Dr. Kruzel. One combination product that he uses has 160 milligrams of saw palmetto, 320 milligrams of pumpkin seed oil, and 20 milligrams of pygeum. Take two capsules twice a day until your symptoms improve, he suggests, then take one capsule twice a day to maintain prostate health.
Every eight hours, researchers gave a dilute extract of nettle root to 67 patients over 60 years of age. The men with the mildest problems found significant relief in just three to six weeks. The results were less encouraging for men with more severe cases, as it took a few more weeks before any effect was noticed. Nevertheless, many of the subjects had fewer nighttime awakenings to urinate. The herb did not shrink the prostate but apparently reduced inflammation and swelling.
The freeze-dried preparation is made from nettle that is processed soon after harvesting, he says. Slow drying and processing remove many of the active ingredients. Try to survive on a corn-based diet, and you run the risk of getting pellagra, a disease caused by niacin deficiency. Corn lacks niacin. Years ago, people in the South who depended on corn grits as a diet staple suffered from this body-wide disease that leads to dermatitis, diarrhea, and depression. It can even lead to death, if deprivation continues long enough. Today, nearly everyone gets sufficient niacin.
For men with mild BPH, he also suggests taking two 300-milligram doses of nettle twice a day until symptoms improve, then taking one capsule once or twice a day to maintain prostate health. Zinc: A Highly Influential Mineral Some alternative practitioners believe that zinc is probably the most important mineral for preventing and treating BPH. "The prostate has one of the highest concentrations of zinc of any tissue in the body. It's abundant in semen and in the thin, milky fluid that the prostate gland secretes in the urethra just before ejaculation to prevent infections," says Dr. Kruzel.

Help from Tree and Weed Two other botanical medicines that are widely used to treat prostate enlargement are Pygeum africanum and nettle. Although neither has been as widely studied as saw palmetto, they are considered good choices. P. africanum is an evergreen tree native to Africa that contains compounds that have anti-inflammatory properties. Several clinical trials involving more than 600 men have shown that pygeum extract is effective in reducing BPH symptoms.

For this purpose prepare a second quart of the nettle decoction. Dip a flannel in the hot tea, wring out and place on the affected part, cover with a dry towel, and retain until cool. Then renew the flannel, and continue the hot fomentations until relief is obtained. Chinese herbalists have reportedly cured many a severe case of pleurisy with the above treatment. Stinging nettle (1) is a robust perennial with a creeping rhizome that is difficult to eradicate and four-angled stems. All parts of the plant are covered with stinging hairs. The stalked leaves are heart-shaped at the base and coarsely serrate; the upper side is covered with appressed hairs and partly with long stinging hairs. The green flowers are arranged in long clusters of either male or female examples; the fruit is an ovoid achene. The species is quite variable.
These give nettle primarily diuretic, antirheumatic, and 'blood-purifying' properties, the latter being produced by the effect of speeding up the metabolism. Externally use is made of the inflammatory effect of the stinging hairs in the drug. The drug is used in the form of a decoction prepared from one teaspoon of crumbled leaves or one tablespoon of crumbled stems and leaves to one cup water, boiled briefly for five minutes, and taken three times daily, best of all after meals.
Besides Chicory root, these tea mixtures contain the stems and leaves of nettle, birch leaves, and the flowers of elder. The abovementioned related vegetable plants, mainly because of their vitamin content and pleasant bitter substances, are, moreover, important ingredients in a proper diet. Chicory (1) is a tall herb, exuding a milky sap when bruised. It grows by waysides, the edges of fields, embankments and in waste places and may reach a height of over one metre, depending on the location.

Avoid tinctures of nettle. They contain alcohol and may aggravate gout. If you're looking for a cure for male pattern baldness, you won't find it here. Hair loss is a trait inherited through the maternal side of the family. If your mom's dad or her brothers are bald, the cards are stacked against you. Unless you're willing to spend hundreds of dollars a year on hair-raising new drugs that may or may not produce results, you'll just have to resign yourself to a future of diminishing strands. Not all hair loss is inevitable, however, nor is the decline entirely controlled by genes.

That's how I learned what I know (of course the movie was yet another Hollywood travesty, but the canoeing was an excellent adventure and the local nettle community most forgiving of my negligence— it even showed me a slew of its other luscious patches along the river's banks). There are a couple things to keep in mind when drying herbs. If herbs are dried too quickly by using too much heat, they roast and lose their potency. When herbs are dried too slowly, they can mold and/or self-destruct by enzymatic actions, which also seriously impoverishes their quality.

Sherman reports that nettle (Urtica dioica) has the ability to clear the sinuses and can greatly reduce the symptoms of hay fever. Tincture of licorice is also often recommended (1A to one teaspoon should be taken in warm water twice daily, five days a week). This regimen is believed to be most effective if it is initiated a month before the season when symptoms usually appear. A combination of black cohosh, skullcap, pleurisy root, catnip, and red pepper has also proven effective for hay fever sufferers, according to Dr. Sherman.
Tinctures of echinacea, Siberian ginseng, nettle, and goldenseal should be combined in equal parts and a half teaspoon taken three times a day," says David Hoffmann, B.Sc, M.N.I.M.H., an herbalist from Sebastopol, California, and past President of the American Herbalists Guild. Licorice and Indian gooseberry are also recommended. SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS FOR MEN Men with untreated STDs, says Tom Kruzel, N.D., run the risk of infertility or impotence.

He arranged the chopped nettle in a little mound in the center of the cloth, then folded the corners in and turned it upside down. "He then took the blunt hammer-end of a hatchet some of the boys used to split branches with for fire wood and began beating the top of the folded neckerchief a number of times. The boy, whose neckerchief it was, moaned about the stain it would leave and the heck he would catch from his mom for this, but my husband paid no attention to this at all.
If intended for internal purposes, only a small amount (about one-half cup) of nettle juice needs to be consumed at one time. When external applications are desired, soak clean cloth or double-layered gauze material in the fresh juice, gently squeeze out excess liquid, and put directly on the surface of the skin. In the case of dried plants whose tissues are relatively soft or spongy, such as Burdock root or nettle root, this process takes place comparatively fast; however, when a plant material is hard or callous, such as dried WildYam, Stone Root, Oregon Grape root, or Turmeric, much more time is required. Before the tissues of these plants can absorb a sufficient amount of menstruum, they must be broken up into fine pieces in order to expose their softer internal tissues to the action of the solvent. This is also required when extracting many seeds and leaves.

It is an astringent, which is useful for relieving excessive discharge and bleeding, and is diuretic and hypotensive. nettle root is tonic for the genito-urinary system. It is a good prostate tonic and quite helpful for benign prostatic enlargement. It is an excellent potherb cooked like spinach or any other fresh greens. Peppermint is one of humanity's favorite and most uplifting flavors. It is carminative and anti-spasmodic, having a relaxing effect on the muscles of the digestive system; it combats flatulence and stimulates bile and the flow of digestive juices.
When I use a mild tonic herb such as nettle, Dandelion, or Hawthorn, I will take up to five drop-persful in a glass of water 2 to 3 times a day. When taking a more intense herb, such as Echinacea or Chaparral, I take anywhere from 10 to 25 drops, 3 to 4 times a day. With Cayenne, sometimes 1 drop is plenty. SUMMARY Since most medicinal plants are made up of representatives from various types of constituents, categorized as either active or ballast substances, the extraction agents should not be geared solely to any individual substance.
