The herb nettle, which can be taken in tea form, can be helpful in relieving respiratory problems caused by asthma. It is rich in butyric acid, necessary for a healthy metabolism, and in other vitamins and minerals.
Many children with asthma can have attacks triggered by eating certain foods. If you have a child with asthma, keep track of what your child eats and how he or she feels afterward to develop an ongoing list of things that may be triggering asthmatic responses. Then have your child avoid those foods as much as possible. |

The study concluded good efficacy and tolerance in the administration of PRO 160/120® for approximately one year of therapy. After 24 weeks, maximum urine volume per second by 3.3 ml/s had occurred with the combination compared to only a slight improvement of 0.55 ml/s with placebo. Subjective reports corresponding to the l-PSS found a highly significant (p<0.00l) advantage with the combination vs. placebo.

In my experience, nettle prefers moist soil and tolerates full sun to partial shade. I suggest steaming or boiling the leaves for a few minutes immediately after harvesting. This takes away the sting, leaving behind tasty, vitamin-rich greens that can be eaten like spinach. I have a big plot of nettle, and I often steam the leaves as a side dish.

It has been suggested that the nettle leaf could have a diuretic effect, resulting in an increased elimination of 'toxins' such as uric acid.1,6 The localized irritation resulting from topical application of the stinging leaves of this plant is also reputed to be beneficial.6
In vitro trials have demonstrated that an hydroalcoholic preparation of the leaves of Urtica dioica possesses anti-inflammatory properties. The mechanism of action proposed is that it influences the synthesis of leukotrienes and cyclo-oxygenase derived prostaglandins. |

They've convinced everyone that the sun causes skin cancer and therefore we must coat ourselves (and our babies and children) with sunscreen lotion in order to protect ourselves from skin cancer. It's a completely ludicrous idea based on nothing but junk science combined with clever sunscreen marketing.
Now, here's the truth about the situation. Sunscreen itself usually contains toxic fragrance chemicals that actually cause cancer. The very product that the industry says will protect you from cancer is partly responsible for causing it! This isn't the first time we've heard that. |

This suggests the presence of other substances capable of inducing a secondary release of inflammatory mediators.
The nettle is less likely to cause stinging if squeezed firmly than if touched gendy. Vigorous massage or application of cold compresses will often reduce symptoms of netde-induced urticaria. However, reactions to some net-de plants may be more severe. Urtica gigas has caused death in horses in New Zealand and U. ferox has caused death in humans. |

| If TNF-a levels are elevated, nettle leaf extract may help suppress them. An expensive drug called Enbrel also lowers TNF- a, but it may not be affordable, requires twice weekly injections, and may have some side effects.
An inexpensive prescription drug that has been shown to lower TNF-a is pentoxifylline. This drug was approved to reduce blood viscosity and treat occlusive arterial disease, but a beneficial side effect is its ability to down-regulate the release of TNF-a, interleukin 1(b), and interleukin 6. |

A brush against the nettle plant shears off a cap from the hairs, revealing a sharp, beveled, hollow structure that resembles a hypodermic needle. From this structure, an irritant liquid enters the skin; this liquid contains inflammatory mediators such as histamine, acetylcholine, and 5-hydroxytryptamine. These chemicals cause the immediate reaction, but stinging can continue for more than 12 hours, even after features of urticaria have disappeared. This suggests the presence of other substances capable of inducing a secondary release of inflammatory mediators. |

Nettle leaf extract has been found to contain a variety of active compounds, such as COX -and lipooxygenase inhibitors and substances that affect cytokine secretion (Obenreis et al. 1996; Teucher et al. 1996).
A placebo-controlled trial by Feldman et al. (1997) provided the first convincing evidence that blockade of a specific cytokine could be effective treatment in human autoimmune ot inflammatory diseases. Interesting results with TNF-alpha blockade have also been achieved in trials conducted on Crohn's disease, sepsis, and HIV/AIDS. |

Because the body can pay attention to only so many pain signals at one time, the irritation caused by the nettle stings helps block the pain of arthritic joints. Products like Ben-Gay work in much the same way to relieve muscle soreness.
If urtication doesn't seem very appealing to you, you may want to try eating stewed nettle leaves instead. Some people claim that the leaves enhance the effectiveness of their NSAIDs. When the leaves are stewed or steamed, they lose their sting and emerge as a tasty vegetable similar to spinach. |

Synergy between different herbs in a formulation was also shown pharmacologically by a combination of nettle (Urtica dioica) and pygeum bark (Primus africana, syn. Pygeum africanum), which is taken for benign prostate hyperplasia. In an in vitro assay, a combination of both herbs inhibited 5a-reductase and aromatase more significantly than the sum of either herbs acting alone. |
