Combine equal parts of dried chamomile and elder flowers, comfrey root, and nettle leaf to equal a hefty handful or 1 ounce (by weight) and place the blend in a covered teapot or mason jar with a tight lid. Pour in 16 ounces of boiling water and steep for 4 hours. Chamomile oils will evaporate with steam, says Falconi, so it's important to keep the container covered while steeping. Strain and pour 8 ounces of the mixture into a 16-ounce jar with 8 ounces of 80-proof vodka. Stir in 2 teaspoons of glycerin, then cap the jar and shake well. Store the mixture in a spray bottle for easy misting. |

Stinging nettle, in powder and liquid forms, has always been a favorite of mine. It works especially well for acne in youth and for tiny pimples that show up in the faces of pets. A strong solution of the tea is practical for bathing the face several times a day. Also, small dabs of the powder applied directly with a cotton swab to cysts or pimples and left there for a few hours will help to dry them out.
Cabbage and garlic are useful, too, but in a different way. |

Be sure and wash your hands after use. rich nettle tea is sipped to relieve arthritis.
QUINCE In the 12th century, in Bingen, Germany, a mystic named Saint Hildegard used her knowledge of natural medicine to treat arthritis. Her words of wisdom still hold today: "Detoxify, purify, and regenerate the whole organism."
To get rid of the rheumatic toxins that cause pain, Hildegard prescribed eating fragrant, raw quince. The fruit, which can be found seasonably in most grocery stores, can be cooked in water or wine, baked in a cake or pie, or made into jellies and candy.

Burdock
Take 20 to 30 drops of tincture in 1 to 8 ounces of water three or four times a day. Burdock is another herb that acts to gently cleanse the body and purify the blood. The root can be found in dried form, as capsules, or as a tincture, but the tincture is probably most effective, Bancroft says. Continue to take this herb for a short time after you feel better.

Although the nettle leaf had no effect on basal levels of cytokines, it did significantly decrease the release of TNF-alpha and IL-l-beta after LPS stimulation ex vivo. However, an increase in IL-6 was not observed after oral ingestion, confirming that in vitro results are not necessarily translatable into clinical findings. This is probably because some compounds in the plant exhibit poor bioavailabilities after oral doses.48
In their discussion of their findings, the authors highlighted some of the inadequacies of current treatments for arthritis. |

Fewer studies have been done with stinging nettle extract than with the other botanical medicines discussed. Two double-blind studies have shown it to be more effective than a placebo.74,75 However, like pygeum, the results with urtica are less impressive than those with saw palmetto extract (or Cernilton). Like the extract of Serenoa repens, urtica extracts appear to interact with binding of DHT to cytosolic and nuclear receptors. |

The precise explanation for the apparent efficacy of remedies like birch, celery seed and nettle leaf in arthritic diseases may be more complex.
This tradition is a reminder of the wider assumption that diuretics were among the eliminative strategies applied to a range of toxic conditions associated especially with inflammatory diseases and persistent or recurrent infections (see p.140). Any hint of fluid retention accompanying such conditions would be a traditional indication for diuretics. |

Five hundred and sixteen patients completed a 48-week treatment with the herbal combination (240 mg) extract of nettle root (10:1) and 320 mg liposterolic extract of saw palmetto per day) or finasteride (5 mg per day). Both treatments significantly improved urinary flow and IPSS. There was no significant difference between the two treatments. Fewer adverse events were reported for the herbal combination, especially diminished ejaculation volume, erectile dysfunction and headache. Economic evaluation revealed that the herbal treatment was also more cost-effective. |
