Earl L. Mindell, R.Ph., Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Grapefruit seed extract, garlic oil and oregano oil are all very effective antifungals. It's certainly worth giving them a try before taking a potent antifungal drug. Be sure to take probiotics to enhance your body's production of its own "good" bacteria.
Vaginal Yeast Infections
Vaginal yeast infections are an overgrowth of Candida, usually caused by taking antibiotics. They cause itching and redness and a white discharge from the vagina. Yeast infections can also be caused when the pH of the vagina is altered, creating a favorable environment for Candida growth. | James A. Duke, Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Here's where I plug my Happy Herpicide Tea, which is made from several herbs that are members of the mint family: hyssop, lemon balm, oregano, rosemary, sage, self-heal (yes, this is the name of a widely available herb) and thyme.
To make the tea, fill a saucepan half full of water. Bring the water to a boil, then add fresh lemon balm leaves until the pan is about three-quarters full. If you don't have access to fresh leaves, you can use about a quarter-cup of dried lemon balm. | Elson M. Haas, M.D. See book keywords and concepts | Flowers of many common herbs, such as rosemary, dill, oregano, chives, sage, and marjoram, are also edible.
Most of these flowers have a little carbohydrate, no fat, and not much protein. Many contain some vitamin C, and vitamin A is found in others. A few of the minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc, may also be found in certain flowers. However, we wouldn't really think of eating flowers for their nutrient content, which is low, but for the other subtle and lovely qualities they may offer. | James A. Duke, Ph.D. See book keywords and concepts | Aside from the lemon balm, the actual amounts of the other herbs don't make much difference; just make sure you use twice as much of the oregano and self-heal as you do of the others. Finally, toss in a little licorice root to sweeten the tea and steep it for 20 minutes.
This mixture contains a dozen compounds that are active against herpes. |

Since the volatile oils are quickly absorbed, as well as being associated with inducing heartburn, an enteric coating is recommended to ensure delivery to the small and large intestine. An effective dosage for an enteric-coated volatile oil preparation is 0.2-0.4 ml twice daily between meals.

Fats and Oils
Repeated high-temperature heating of oils and fats converts them to pro-inflammatory, cancer-causing substances, so fried foods need to be strictly avoided. Lower-temperature steaming, boiling, broiling, stir-frying, and roasting are preferable to frying. It is particularly important to avoid all hydrogenated fats, oils, and margarines. | Stephen T., M.D. Sinatra See book keywords and concepts | Mediterranean Seafood Sauce with Jerusalem Artichoke Pasta

Legumes are perfect in warm, comforting winter soups starring black beans, lentils, or split peas. And they work equally well in light summer fare when mixed with fresh greens and raw vegetables and herbs, as in lentils with arugula and watercress, cooked kidney beans with fresh green beans, black-eyed peas with carrots and celery.
Mashed-legume dips and spreads can replace cream cheese or sour cream. They work on sandwiches and are tasty side dishes. | Leo Galland See book keywords and concepts | Sage and rosemary contain the essential oil eucalyptol, which kills Candida albicans, bacteria, and worms. oregano contains over thirty biologically active ingredients of which twelve have antibiotic, antiviral, antiparasitic, or antifungal effects.71 Thyme has antiparasitic activity as well.
Meals seasoned with these pungent, aromatic herbs, consumed regularly, help protect against intestinal infection. However, heating at 200 degrees Fahrenheit for twenty minutes destroys the antibacterial activity of most of these spices. | | Spice your meals liberally with garlic, onion, ginger, turmeric, oregano, sage, thyme, and rosemary. Buy fresh local produce in season, wash and peel or scrub clean with a soft brush just before cooking or eating. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after handling food. Cook all meat, fish, or poultry well and thoroughly clean all utensils that contact uncooked food. Filter and/or boil drinking water as described on pages 228-29. | Lita Lee, Lisa Turner and Burton Goldberg See book keywords and concepts | Other aromatic oils for lung problems include: hyssop, ravensara, frankincense, oregano, peppermint, thyme, cypress, eucalyptus, sandalwood, cedarwood, and chamomile. One or more of these additional oils may be used along with RC and Raven in the same application and dosage as above.
CANCER
Cancer is a disease in which healthy cells stop functioning and maturing properly. As the normal cycle of cell creation and death is interrupted, these newly "mutated" cancer cells begin multiplying uncontrollably. This process, if unchecked, will eventually lead to the formation of a cancerous tumor. | Frantisek Stary See book keywords and concepts | The genus Origanum is represented in the area from the Mediterranean region to India by about thirty species. oregano is one of the hardiest of these. It is distributed throughout the temperate regions of Eurasia, its range extending to the Himalayas and central Siberia, elsewhere having been introduced. The flowering stems are collected in high summer, in dry weather. | | Two other species of the Labiatae family are used for the same purposes as oregano. They are Yssop {Hyssopus officinalis ?3), and Savory (Satureja hortensis ?4), both native to the region extending from the Mediterranean to Iran. Each species contains essential oil and tannins, and the dosage as well as uses are similar. All three of the above mentioned herbs were used medicinally in the Greek, Roman and Arab civilizations. They are also excellent culinary herbs both in terms of the aroma and flavour they give to foods and their usefulness in aiding digestion. |
